RJT SEAL

An RJT seal is an O-ring style gasket that provides a hygienic, leak-proof connection in RJT (Ring Joint Type) unions. These seals are manufactured to the BS 4825 Part 5 standard and are available in various food-grade materials to suit different chemical and temperature requirements. 

Common Seal Materials and Properties

The choice of seal material depends entirely on the specific application, including the type of media flowing through the pipes and the operating temperatures. 

  • Nitrile (NBR): Supplied as the standard option with most complete unions, it offers good resistance to oils, fats, and general chemicals, making it suitable for food and beverage processes without steam.
  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): Known for excellent resistance to hot water, steam, and acids. It is a popular choice for applications involving frequent Clean In Place (CIP) cycles due to its temperature range of up to +120°C/+150°C.
  • Viton® (FKM/FPM): Offers superior resistance to a broader range of aggressive chemicals, high temperatures, and oxidation compared to NBR or EPDM.
  • Silicone (VMQ): Ideal for extreme temperature fluctuations, with a wide operating range, but may have less chemical resistance than other options.
  • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene): An inert, high-performance option renowned for its exceptional chemical resistance and non-stick properties. It is often used as a white seal or as a PTFE envelope with a rubber inner.
