Sleeve anchors are highly versatile, medium-duty expansion fasteners that stand out because they can be safely used in both solid concrete and hollow masonry, such as brick, cinder block, and stone.
While drop-in and wedge anchors are strictly limited to solid concrete, the full-length expansion sleeve of a sleeve anchor distributes gripping pressure evenly across a larger surface area.
This prevents brittle brick or hollow block walls from cracking or exploding under pressure.
Core Mechanics & Head Styles
A sleeve anchor consists of a central threaded stud with a flared, cone-shaped bottom, wrapped completely in a split metal tube (the sleeve).
When you tighten the top head, the threaded stud pulls its widened bottom cone up into the tube. This action forces the sleeve to expand outward against the internal walls of the hole.
Unlike wedge anchors, sleeve anchors come in several distinct head styles to match cosmetic and architectural needs:
Push-Through Installation Sequence
Sleeve anchors allow for time-saving, push-through installation, meaning you do not have to move your fixture after marking the holes.
Tighten to Expand: Tighten the nut or screw clockwise with a wrench or socket. Turn it approximately 3 to 5 full rotations until it reaches the specified installation torque. The compression crumple-zones built into quality sleeves will pull the fixture firmly flat against the wall.
