Spring toggle fixings are specialised, heavy-duty hollow wall anchors designed specifically for plasterboard.
They are one of the most reliable options for hanging heavy items from hollow walls or ceilings because they do not rely on friction or expansion.
Instead, they use a mechanical anchoring method that spreads the weight of the load across a wide surface area on the hidden back-side of the wall plasterboard.
How They Work
A spring toggle consists of a long, fully-threaded metal bolt and a pair of spring-loaded metal "wings."
To install it, you squeeze the metal wings completely flat against the sides of the bolt.
You push the flattened wings through a pre-drilled hole in the drywall.
Once the wings pass completely through the thickness of the board into the hollow cavity behind, the internal spring forces them to snap wide open.
As you tighten the bolt from the front, the open metal wings are pulled flush against the back of the plasterboard, sandwiching the wall tightly between the wings and your fixture.

Large Hole Required: Because the wings must pass through the wall while folded over the bolt, you have to drill a much larger hole in the front of your wall than the actual screw diameter (e.g., a 5mm bolt often requires a 14mm hole).
