HEX THIN NUT

Hex thin nuts (also known as Jam Nuts) are essentially a slimmer version of the standard hex full nut. In the trade, they are used where space is a premium or as a locking mechanism. 

Key Characteristics

  • Dimensions: A thin nut is typically about half the height of a standard full nut (approximately 0.5 to 0.6 times the nominal diameter).
  • Standards: In metric sizes, they usually conform to DIN 439 or ISO 4035.
  • Strength: Because they have fewer threads engaging the bolt, they have lower load-bearing capacity and are not intended to be the primary load-bearing fastener in high-tension applications. 

Primary Uses

  1. The "Jamming" Method: This is the most common use. A thin nut is tightened against a standard hex full nut to "lock" it in place.
  2. Low Profile Clearances: Used in tight spots where a standard nut is too tall to fit, such as on thin panels or shallow threaded studs.
  3. Adjustment Points: Often used on tie rods, control linkages, or sensor mounts. The thin nut acts as a stop-point, allowing you to lock a component at a specific position along a threaded shaft without it vibrating loose.
  4. Tapped Holes: They are frequently used as a secondary lock for a bolt that is already threaded into a tapped hole in a piece of machinery. 

Materials

Like full nuts, they are available in:

  • Steel: Bright Zinc Plated (BZP) or Self-Colour.
  • Stainless Steel: A2 (304) and A4 (316).
